COUNTRYSIDE RAVE ART PROJECT - C.R.A.P

Jonty Kristian Mellmann’s graduate collection - titled ‘Countryside Rave Art Project’ - is inspired by a fictional subculture within which the styles, symbols and sounds of crusty ravers and the characters of the British countryside melt together in an acid fuelled frenzy. Tweed meets terrorcore, acid techno meets argyle and Bruegel-esque paintings depict big bouncy basslines.
Staple menswear garment styles are re-imagined in complexly fabricated new ways. Tailoring and shirting clash with neon, reflective and other hallmarks of the rave scene. Dead-stock fabrics, charity shop clothes and scrap materials find their way into the collection: sometimes all that is new is the thread, sometimes the old is more carefully combined with new materials and custom digital prints in an old-meets-new ethos that considers sustainability.
The bold, graphic prints of the collection feature a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, showcasing a vision of what menswear and rave clothing can be: beautiful, bright and a bit cheeky. There is a heavy use of symbolism and iconography throughout the collection: some references are quite obvious like the ’23’ mythology or ‘put a banging donk on it!’ (referring to Blackout Crew- Put a Donk on It). Some are less so, such as the South Buckinghamshire District Council Crest relatively stupidly re-imagined to feature the same cross as PRSPCT records and the Schleswig-Holstein crest now saying ‘Gabba’.
